Five ad hoc officials of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) participating in the Imo state governorship
re-run polls today met their waterloo as they were arrested for
thumb-printing ballot papers as the elections were ongoing.
The officials were arrested at Omuma Primary School in Oru East local government area following an order by Mr Mike Igini, one of the resident electoral commissioners deployed to the state to ensure the elections were hitch-free.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo, Dr Gabriel Ada, while confirming the arrest, told Punch that the culprits were already in police custody.
He said the ad hoc workers connived with agents of a political party to thumb-print ballot papers leading to their arrest.
In a related development, the election has been cancelled in Ozuh Primary School, Omuma following the arrest of 25 persons claiming to be INEC officials by military men.
The arrested persons and the election materials in their possession were taken to the Oru East local government headquarters.
According to Daily Trust, an unnamed sister of the senatorial candidate for Orlu, Hope Uzodinma, is said to be among the INEC staff arrested.
Also, an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Rex Anunobi, was arrested by thugs at Oru East LGA while trying to run way with ballot materials. But on sighting security men coming after them, they abandoned him and disappeared.
