Buhari to merge EFCC, ICPC; 42 ministries reduced to 19

After three weeks of consultations with international and Nigeria’s political leaders, President Muhammadu Buhari appears set to effect major changes in the administration of the country in a bid to translate the ‘change’ mantra of his party into reality. To start with, the President  is said to have accepted the recommendation of the transition committee he raised a few weeks ago to slash the number of ministries from the present 42 to 19 with a view to saving cost and making them more effective and responsive to the needs of  Nigerians.
In the same vein, many of the ministries have been merged to ensure proper coordination of duties and ensure greater efficiency and service delivery.
A source close to the Presidency told  Sunday  Vanguard that the number of  Federal Government departments and agencies had also been trimmed in line with the policy of the administration.
Effectively, it means that no fewer than 50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost.
The Presidency source hinted,”But the point being made is that relevant MDAs that will exist under the present administration must be those backed by laws.
“What that means is that the era of doing things the wrong way to please certain persons in positions of power is over.”
Shedding light on some of the ministries that had been merged, the official pointed out that the Ministry of Aviation and relevant agencies had been subsumed with Inland Waterways and associated agencies.
Similarly, the Ministry of Agriculture has been merged with that of Water Resources under what the  Presidency source described as the consolidation of larger ministries.
It was learnt that under the administration of Buhari,  only 19 ministers and 17 ministers of state would operate as opposed to the previous arrangement where there were at least 42.
It was further gathered that some ministries would be run by senior ministers while others would be manned by junior ministers to save cost.

Australian ISIS doctor: 'I have no concern if you cancel my passport'

Kamleh

Notorious Australian doctor Tareq Kamleh — sometimes known as Abu Yousef Al-Australie after he travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State — has declared on Facebook he will never return to Australia and doesn't care if authorities cancel his Australian passport.
Dr. Kamleh, who is believed to have grown up in Perth, came to Australia's attention in April when he was featured in an ISIS propaganda video. In the clip, the doctor appears to be working in a paediatric hospital in Raqqa, Syria and urges other medical practitioners to join him.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and South Australia Police issued a warrant for Dr. Kamleh's arrest on Thursday. He is wanted for membership of a terrorist organisation, recruiting for a terrorist organisation and for entering, or remaining in, an area the government has deemed a no-go area due to terrorism, according to joint statement issued by law enforcement.
Addressing the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) on Facebook Sunday, Dr. Kamleh wrote he was unconcerned if the medical association cancelled his registration and said that he intended to stay in the Middle East. "I have no concern if you cancel my passport," he added.
"I anticipated an arrest warrant, hence why I left in secret," Dr. Kamleh wrote in response to the move by the AFP. "None of the case you put forward has indicated to me a malicious character on my behalf and it is this injustice within the Australian judicial system that was a catalyst for me to leave."
Dr. Kamleh's statement comes amidst a furious debate in Australia over whether alleged terrorists should lose their Australian passport. Prime Minister Tony Abbott wants to give the immigration minister the power to strip suspected terrorists of their citizenship, even without trial, if they are a dual national.

The BrainPort V100, cleared for 250,000 profoundly blind Americans without sensitivity to light, will cost about $10,000, said Robert Beckman, chief executive officer of closely held Wicab Inc. The three-part device captures images with a camera mounted on sunglasses, routes them through a hand-held controller and sends them to a 1-inch square device containing 400 electrical stimulation points that rests on the user's tongue.

Nigeria President Set To Reduce The Number Of Ministries To 19

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly accepted the transition committee’s recommendation to reduce the number of ministries from 42 to 19.
The decision allegedly comes following three weeks of consultations with political leaders both inside and outside Nigeria, Vanguard reports.
The committee had previously recommended the move because “portfolios of ministries are not responsive to all the major critical national challenges.”
By slashing some and merging other ministries, Buhari plans to save on costs and make the remaining departments more effective and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.
A presidency source also disclosed that the number of federal government agencies had been trimmed in line with the policy of the administration. According to the source, no fewer than 50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost.
