Major power outage sweeps Washington, White House

A power outage swept the Washington area Tuesday, hitting the White House, the Capitol and the State Department and knocking out electricity for thousands around the US capital.
Outages stretched from downtown Washington into neighboring Maryland, knocking power out for more than 2,500 people, according to area power companies.
Most outages were brief, but computer sy

stems were downtown offices and access to Metro trains were disrupted.
Washington power provider Pepco said the outage was caused by a dip in voltage as a result of an issue with the transmission line.
“There was never a loss of permanent supply of electricity to customers,” Pepco said.
Electricity was back to normal by mid-afternoon and the company had dispatched teams to look into how it happened.
“Customers should be able to operate their own equipment at this time. There are no current supply problems. We have crews on site investigating the cause.”
Outages were reported at more than 2,100 premises and households in Washington, according to Pepco, and more in Maryland suburbs southeast of the capital
Major government buildings were not spared, including the White House, which lost power briefly.
Back-up generators kicked in promptly to restore lights and computers that were knocked out for several seconds, according to an AFP reporter.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said there was no indication that the outage was as a result of a security breach.
“I do not currently see a nexus to terrorism,” he told reporters.
The State Department went dark in the middle of a press briefing, which continued on for a time in the dark, a spokeswoman reading from her notes with the light from her cellphone.
“The State Department was among the buildings affected today by a power outage,” spokesman Jeff Rathke said.
“The department has continued to carry out its essential functions throughout the outage.”
Lights had returned to the building by mid-afternoon.
Power at Capitol Hill flickered on and off intermittently but was later restored, an official there said.
The Department of Homeland Security ruled out foul play, and said it was “closely monitoring the reports of power outages affecting parts of Washington, DC.”
“At this time, there is no indication that this outage is the result of any malicious activity,” DHS added.

Elsewhere, several Smithsonian buildings were evacuated as they went dark, including the Air and Space museum and the American Art museum, which was closed. They later reopened.
The Portrait Gallery was also lights out, posting a photo of a darkened hall on Twitter.
“In case you wanted to see what a museum looks like when there’s a power outage,” the caption read.
Dan Kuntz, visiting from DuBois, Pennsylvania, was winding up his visit to the National Portrait Gallery when the lights went out.
“The power started flickering, and then boom,” he told AFP as he enjoyed a soda on the steps of the National Air and Space Museum, which had also been affected.
Museum staff corralled most visitors into the open-air cafeteria space, said Kuntz, who himself made a bee line to the exit and proceeded to the National Museum of Natural History, which remained open.
Several metro stations lost power and were on emergency lighting, but trains continued to run in the nation’s capital.
Metro police said on Twitter “units responding to assist at all stations affected by power outages. No elevator entrapments reported at any station.”
Power had returned to most metro depots by afternoon.
The hashtag #dcpoweroutage was one of the top trends after the cut, with some users posting photos of darkened subway tunnels and the lights-out State Department briefing.
By later Tuesday afternoon, the regional power company, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, said only seven people were without power in the region.

Stop promoting ethnic hatred, Jonathan warns

Abuja—President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned against promoting divisiveness, sectionalism and ethnic hatred in the country following the outcome of the March 28 elections, warning that those engaged in such acts should “cease and desist from actions that detract from the true spirit and culture of democracy envisioned by patriotic men and women of goodwill in Nigeria.
In a statement yesterday, the Special Adviser to President on Media and Publicity, Dt Reuben Abati said the president was “concerned about the negative triumphalism that has been put on display by certain elements since March 31 which flies in the face of his personal commitment to post-election peace, unity and national stability”.

According to Dr Abati, the president “also condemns the undue harassment of public officials serving under his administration and urges all affected persons to continue to perform their lawful duties without fear”.
The statement reads; “As the nation prepares for Saturday’s governorship and State Assembly elections, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan calls on all Nigerians to remain peaceful, united and law-abiding.
“The President condemns the very unseemly attempt by some politicians, groups and individuals to intimidate others, heat up the polity and cause public disorder and disaffection in the aftermath of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
“President Jonathan is especially concerned about the negative triumphalism that has been put on display by certain elements since March 31 which flies in the face of his personal commitment to post-election peace, unity and national stability.
“The President calls on all those, who through their actions and utterances, have been promoting divisiveness, sectionalism and ethnic hatred in the country following the outcome of the March 28 elections to cease and desist from actions that detract from the true spirit and culture of democracy envisioned by patriotic men and women of goodwill in Nigeria.
“President Jonathan also condemns the undue harassment of public officials serving under his administration and urges all affected persons to continue to perform their lawful duties without fear.
“The President cautions that this should be a time for the healing of political wounds in the overriding interest of national unity, stability and progress, not a time for ethnic jingoism and the settling of scores.
“The Federal Government will not condone any attempt to instigate a crisis in any part of the country in furtherance of personal political ambitions.
“President Jonathan assures all Nigerians that his administration remains fully committed to national progress and the entrenchment of the best values of democracy for the good of all Nigerians.

Church razed, pastor’s daughter killed in Kano, Nigeria

ABUJA—At least one person died, Monday, as irate youths set ablaze Baptist Church at Gidan Maso village in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, while the residence of the pastor, Rev Habila Garba, was also burnt.
This came barely a week after unidentified arsonists attacked a branch of Living Faith Church, popularly called Winners Chapel, at Giwa in Kaduna State.
The deceased, one of the pastor’s daughters, was said to have died of suffocation as parts of the house were destroyed by the fire, which resulted from the attack at about 7:30p.m.
President of Tarayyar Masihiyawan Nijeria (Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri Christians), General Ishaku Ahmed Dikko (retd), told newsmen yesterday in Abuja that the intention was to kill one youth, Yahaya Joshua, who converted to Islam but later reverted to Christianity.
Dikko, in a statement, called on the state government to live up to its statutory responsibility of ensuring protection of lives and property.
Narrating the incident, he said: “The Baptist Church at Gidan Maso village of Rogo Local Government Area in Kano State was set on fire by youths of the village on April 1 at about 7:30p.m.
“The church and all the properties were burnt down in the presence of the Christian community despite all pleadings for them to stop the destruction.
“The arsonists gathered cornstalks, put them inside the church before setting it ablaze. This made the action to seem deliberate and for ulterior motives.
“The Christians present exhibited great Christian qualities by not taking the law into their hands by trying to stop them by force.

“Rather than see reason, the arsonist were infuriated which led to setting the house of the pastor, Rev Habila Garba, ablaze as well.
“One of the pastor’s daughters died of suffocation and most parts of the house destroyed.
“They also attacked and wounded Bawa Adamu and Aminu Dauda, who received machete cuts leading to broken arms. Others received similar wounds, but of lesser degrees.
“The cause of the barbaric act was to kill one youth, Yahaya Joshua, who converted to Islam but later on reverted back to Christianity.
“He had escaped on learning of the plan to kill him. They therefore set the Church and Pastor’s house on fire and went about maiming and wounding any Christian they saw.
“The incidence was immediately reported to the Police and the District Head at Rogo. No information has been received about the action taken or if any arrests were made.
“However, all the wounded know and can identify their attackers by name since they all belong to the same village.
“The Tarayyar Masihiyawan Nigeriya is calling on the authorities to take the necessary steps to stem or stop all these harassments and molestations of innocent Christians for whatever reasons.
“We have the right to belong to any religion of our choice and live anywhere in this country.
“We call on the authorities at all levels to rise up to their responsibilities to protect lives and properties of every citizen in this country.”

General Danjuma Meets With Jonathan

Theophilus Danjuma, ex-minister of defence and chairman of Victim Support Fund, met with President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, April 8, when the latter paid him a private visit.
The current leader of the country visited Danjuma in company with a few assistants.
Meanwhile two politicians met behind closed doors and they did not make the purpose of the negotiation public.

At the end of the meeting, however, Danjuma commended Jonathan for conceding the defeat, the late Biafran warlord, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had done the same thing after the fall of Enugu, he would have saved the nation of bloodshed.
He added that Africa and the world should imitate Jonathan.
Former minister said: “The outcome of the election and the manner in which President Jonathan conceded victory to Buhari is un-African. It is very important in the history of Africa.
If Ojukwu did the same after the fall of Enugu, if he had conceded victory to the federal troops, he would have saved the nation one full year of bloodshed.”

He further stated that Nigeria’s current leader had set a record “as something to be emulated by the rest of Africa and indeed the whole world”. “It is an excellent thing he did,” he added.
The former leader had earlier showed optimism that the poll would be free of rancour but warned politicians against challenging comments.
He had said: “I am confident that we would have a foul-free elections once the politicians campaign on issues not personalities and avoid anything capable of causing disaffection.”
Meanwhile, Danjumma asked the authorities to arrest Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, an ex-Niger Delta militant, for making utterances capable of overheating the polity.
It would be recalled a few weeks ago, General Danjuma made his way to Aso Villa as soon as he returned from his trip abroad on March 11.
The meeting was also held behind closed doors.
Danjuma had after the first meeting warned reporters not to speculate about the purpose of the visit.
