Police To Enforce Ban On Pro-Biafra Demonstrations

Following speculation that pro-Biafra activists will stage a protest in Rivers state on Friday, November 6, the Nigerian police command in the state has warned that it will not condone any act which threatens the peace of residents.

The Nigerian police has said it will not tolerate any form of protest which will disrupt the peace of Rivers state.



Sources say that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) plan to stage peaceful demonstrations in major cities of the defunct Eastern region, including Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The protest is aimed at ensuring that some detained members of the Biafra course are released by security officials, including the now infamous director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu who is in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
It would be recalled that a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, remanded in prison custody, about 20 people.
The remanded were arrested and arraigned for allegedly participating in the Monday, October 19, protests by members of IPOB in the state capital.
According to Leadership, the accused persons who are facing a three-count charge in suit no PMC/1195c/2015, include: Benson Sunday, Emmanuel Ali, Ukeme Monday, Chibuzor Eechina, Charles Eze, Egbo Okechukwu, Chibona Ifion.
However, the state commissioner of police, Musa Kimo, who addressed newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, urged the Biafran activists to forget about staging any form of protests in the state.
Kimo said he was aware of plans by some miscreants to carry out the protests in the state, but will not tolerate any lawlessness.
He stated that all security agencies are on alert and prepared to arrest and prosecute anyone found disturbing public peace.
The police spokesman urged parents and guardians to warn their children against participating in any protest in the state.
In a related development, a stern warning has come from the Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), ordering the Nigerian military to release its members within 48 hours.
