President Muhammadu Buhari sacked the 9-man board of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), in order to tackle
structural issues, seal leakages and ensure probity and accountability,
more retrenchments seem soon to follow.
For the newly appointed Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Danladi Keifasi, it’s not the best of times; as Presidency may ease him out sooner than he settles down in his new office.
Keifasi who served on the dissolved board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), is believed to be heavily corrupt.
He was Director of Finance and Accounts, Ministry of Power before his appointment as Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and later moved to Ministries of Aviation and Finance in 2010 and served as member, Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Reports have it that President Mohammadu Buhari who is worried by the level of corruption and scheming in the nation’s highest revenue generating agency has given tacit approval for the anti-corruption agencies to probe the board members and bring to book any one found culpable.

This is in accordance with his repeated promises to probe and clean up the mess in the oil sector, which he took the first bold step by dissolving the NNPC board.
But many Nigerians are of the opinion that due diligence and checks was not carried out on the choice of Mr. Keifasi before his appointment as the Head of the Service of the Federation.
An inside source that spoke to Daily Independent said “we cannot fathom why the same people who ran the NNPC bashfully in the present-past, are rewarded with the position of the Head of Service.”
The source said: “Some of us at the NNPC were not comfortable with the way they were running this place, but the sad thing was that they took decisions as a board in collaboration with the petroleum minister and implemented without any body’s input, which is natural, but the issue here is that were those decisions and corrupt practices in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians?”

He added that “The accounts of the NNPC were never made known for instance, nobody knew how many litres of crude oil were refined, how many we were consuming, how much the corporation made weekly, they would just meet , draw a budget , approve that same budget and spend that same budget without recourse to any extant laws.
The Daily independent source stressed that “Keifasi was a member of that board, and his case is more of a mockery to the anti-corruption war promised by our President because, he is being compensated for aiding corruption with a higher position and that is laughable and I believe the President would take another look at that appointment.
“The rest of the eight members are already out, we are not taking on him (Keifasi) , it is not anything personal , but this one is like rewarding crime. Even if the President wanted him to be Head of Service, he should have waited for the outcome of the probe, or is he not probing this corrupt sector again?” he added.
It must be recalled that the National Assembly committees of petroleum and Finance of the 7th Assembly have queried the discrepancies and secrecy involved in the running of the NNPC accounts severally, but was ignored by the former administration.
It was alleged by the former Central Bank Governor, now Emir of Kano Muhammed Sanusi, that the NNPC could not account for $20billion oil money.
President Muhhamadu Buhari said during his campaigns for the 2015 presidential elections, that he will probe the oil sector if elected President.
In the light of his promise, the Peoples Democratic Party has ordered Buhari to begin the implementation of his campaign promises.
