Akpodoro reportedly ran into an ambush laid by the suspected assassins who opened fire on his car on sighting him on his way from Port Harcourt shortly after Mbiama junction, where the Coalition held the pro-Buhari meeting.
The victim’s aide, Bernard Ochuko, who spoke with a Daily Independent correspondent on Sunday said his boss was rescued by some truck drivers who ran to the scene immediately after hearing gun shots in the area.
Akpodoro, who is an Urhobo-born ex-militant leader, has reportedly gone into hiding while receiving treatment to gunshot wounds  from undisclosed native doctors.
Bernard said Akpodoro’s travail started shortly after a meeting of the ex-militant leaders in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital at which Governor Seriake Dickson was the chairman.
According to Bernard, during the meeting Akpodoro expressed his opposition to a directive issued by senior officials of President Jonathan’s administration.
The aide alleged that at the meeting, all ex-militants were told to gear up for war should Buhari, win the just concluded presidential election.
Bernard said his boss strongly opposed the directive which was supported by the general consensus, and was bullied out of the meeting while other notable ex-militants threatened him.

He revealed that his boss, Akpodoro has escaped assassins’ bullets on more than three occasions.
“He receives anonymous calls at odd hours telling him that his life was in danger,” he said.
The ex-militant’s aide also disclosed that following incessant threats, his boss had to relocate his family to a safe place.
During the election campaign there were several dramas in the South-South region. Some of the ex-militants adopted Buhari and rejected President Jonathan, a development that caused division among the former warlords.
Another group in the Delta region, Niger Delta Progressives Alliance (NDPA), have recently told the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, not to test the determination of the youth to violently resist further dominance of the peoples’ interests.
