Boko Haram Storms Huyum Village, Kills 15
Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Monday, June 8, stormed a Borno village killing 15 people and injuring one.
Huyum residents told AFP that the attackers first surrounded the area and then opened fire burning many houses. They sprinkled petrol on homes to further set them ablaze.
Bukar Zira, who managed to escape to Mubi, Adamawa state, disclosed:
“The whole village was burnt by Boko Haram gunmen. We lost around 500 homes.
“We have so far lost 15 people and one was injured. People in the whole village moved out to different parts of Borno and Adamawa.”
Peter Malgwui added that Boko Haram had recently carried out several raids in the neighbouring communities. He also confirmed the death toll given by Zira.
Another local, Ishaya Ayuba, said:
“The attackers remained up to 4:00am this morning, until they withdrew. There were troops stationed about 20 kilometres away, but they didn’t respond. We have lost everything.”
As Boko Haram atrocities continue, the new administration led by Muhammadu Buhari seeks more effective ways of tackling the insurgency in the country.
The Nigerian military has reportedly relocated its command and control centre to Maiduguri, as directed by Buhari at his inauguration.
The president has also met with the leaders of Chad and Niger to discuss further cooperation. On Monday he attended the summit in Germany, in the course of which the G7 nations pledged support to Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram.
